back to the basics
It’s been a few weeks since closing the doors on our Kansas City studio.
Something that felt - unfinished at the time.
But here we are, weeks later + there’s so much stirring up inside me.
See here’s the thing -
documenting the beauty of adolescence is what really drew me into photography.
The unfiltered, raw chaos that kids brought to the picture - literally.
Along with capturing people, as they are. This is what hooked me, like I imagine a good drug would.
I quickly became obsessed with stopping a sudden moment for someone to view in its entirety, for a lifetime. Pretty freaking powerful.
Even more powerful if you can do this while holding onto the good stuff. The emotion. The gripping view. The SOUL.
That’s what makes photography the most powerful. Feeling from simply, seeing.
Somewhere along the way I lost sight of the “why” - as do a lot of creative entrepreneurs do.
I started working, sharing, + pursuing things I hoped would sell. Things that I thought “people” wanted.
Don’t get me wrong - I’ve learned a crap ton along the way. Pursuing things that filled my cup at the time, finding where I find fulfillment + where I don't. Opening a space that I had HUGE dreams for. It’s all part of the journey. The good stuff.
For a while now, especially these past few weeks, I’ve really wrestled with my why. What brought me here + why do I want to pursue this whole thing anyway? “The Soul Society” as we’ve built it.
Here’s what I keep coming back to.
I’m here for the stories. I’m here for the beauty in the norm. I’m here for the people.
I’m here for the soul. Living with it + sharing it through powerful photographs.
That was the whole point in clicking the button from day one.
Somehow this deep rooted tug to create turned into more of a business than a thriving talent. I know that’s relatable.
So from here on out -
we create from the soul.
we share from the soul. + we never look back.
